Actor Joel Edgerton and director George Miller will receive honorary awards in Los Angeles for their contribution to Australia's reputation in film.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop revealed the two men would be the 2016 Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts honorees on January 28 at the G'Day USA gala.

G'Day USA is a public diplomacy program that promotes Australian talent and business in North America. It recognises outstanding Australians at an LA gala. Previous honourees include Chris Hemsworth, Geoffrey Rush, Jacki Weaver and Paul Hogan.

Miller will receive a lifetime achievement award for his commitment to creative industries in Australia and his reputation as a filmmaker, especially the Mad Max series.

Edgerton will receive the G'Day USA excellence in film award for his work as an actor, writer and director.

"These two immensely talented Australians will rightly be recognised for their contribution to Australia's industries in the creative field," the minister said.

Two other Australian acting exports, Rebel Wilson and Rose Byrne, will help nurture young talent through scholarships at the Sydney-based Australian Theatre for Young People.
