BENGALURU: From connecting farmers to supermarkets by eliminating middlemen to developing a device which links people on social media in remote areas sans internet, the inventions of 12 outstanding students of the world (OSTW) from Indonesia have proved where there is a will, there's a way.
Hoping to expand their horizons, the students are in Bengaluru to get in touch with several institutions and IT companies. Their aim — to learn more about technology and entrepreneurship in the Indian context.
"We are touched by the warmth and kindness of Indians. To be able to help others, I set up a tourism company that guides tourists from abroad and helps people who settle in Indonesia get employment in local schools," said Lia Andarina Grasia, a student of tourism studies.
Teguh Wibowo, 22, an engineering student, said: "An Indian video inspired me to come up with the coconut tree climbing robot. Indian technology has a big role to play in our lives."
An initiative of the ministry of foreign affairs, Republic of Indonesia and consulate general of the Republic of Indonesia, the visit hopes to facilitate exchange of knowledge, innovation, technology and culture between young Indian and Indonesian minds.
The OSTW programme began in 2011 and has seen students visiting the US, Australia, Canada, Japan and Hong Kong. India has been chosen as a platform of learning for this group of engineers, entrepreneurs and business management students for the first time.
"It's great to see the Indian government backing the agriculture, industrial and IT sectors with efficiency. We are learning from the government how to support innovation in various fields," said Michael Jovan, an IT engineer.
Saut Siringoringo, consul general of the Republic of Indonesia, said: "We are looking forward to a healthy tie-up between the nations in terms of social, economical and political relationship.
