Ainslie Embree [JB: see], 96, a scholar and teacher of the history of India at Columbia University who also had served at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi as counselor for cultural affairs, died June 6 at a retirement community in Mitchellville, Md., where he had lived for 18 years. The cause was dementia, said a daughter, Margot Fisher.
He was born in Sunnyside, a village that no longer exists, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. From 1958 to 1991, he was on the faculty at Columbia, with a leave from 1978 to 1980 in New Delhi. In Washington, he taught in the early 2000s at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He was a member of the Cosmos Club.
