In 2018, the world’s largest international celebration of a single film auteur will be held in honor of Swedish director, producer, and screenwriter Ingmar Bergman. The iconic Swedish auteur’s body of work for film and theater brought a new level of psychological depth and intimacy to all disciplines of the performing arts.
Of the more than 60 films and 170 plays that Bergman directed, some of his most famous works today include The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), Persona (1966), Cries and Whispers (1972), and Fanny and Alexander (1982). Bergman also wrote hundreds of articles and books, including his literary memoir The Magic Lantern (1987).
Bergman’s work often focused on the themes of dysfunctional families, failed and sometimes toxic artists, and an absent god. Bergman’s films are set almost exclusively in Sweden, and starting with 1961’s Through a Glass Darkly, they were filmed primarily on the small island of Fårö, northeast of Gotland. Bergman’s films also prompted an international fascination with Scandinavian culture.
The year 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Ingmar Bergman. After his passing in 2007, Bergman has become one of Scandinavia’s most-performed playwrights. Ingmar Bergman was born in Uppsala on the 14th of July, 1918, and the Jubilee, starting in Autumn 2017 and continuing throughout 2018, will take place over the entire world, with theatrical performances, exhibitions, documentaries, film retrospectives, book releases and festivals.
In addition to seminars, documentaries, books, and assorted film and theatrical spotlights throughout the year, highlights of the upcoming Bergman Centennial Jubilee in the United States include:
• December 2017: Private Confessions makes its U.S. premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., adapted for the stage by actress, director, and Bergman muse Liv Ullmann.

• February 2018: Liv Ullmann visits the California Film Institute and the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive for lectures and viewings of Bergman films
• April 2018: After The Rehearsal and Persona are adapted for the stage together by celebrated Belgian director Ivo van Hove at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
• Summer 2018: The Embassy of Sweden, the National Gallery of Art, and the American
Film Institute will showcase of Bergman films in Washington D.C.
