Job description

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Public Diplomacy Counsellor, the Head (Public and Cultural Diplomacy) will promote Canadian culture and creative industries, support advocacy initiatives in line with the mission’s priorities, as well as build and maintain the network of Canadians and Canada-watchers interested in creating synergies to build the Canada brand in the UK.

This position manages the Cultural/Advocacy team and works in collaboration with the Communications unit, other programmes of the Mission and in partnership with UK and Canadian institutions, organisations, government departments and agencies to advance Canada’s foreign policy objectives and to ensure that the cultural program contributes to the achievement of the mission’s objectives in the UK through the arts, cultural and creative industry sectors.

He/she oversees the mission’s cultural and advocacy program and is responsible for developing key strategic partnerships, identifying opportunities for high level networking and implementing the strategy for the delivery of the cultural and advocacy program and public events aimed at raising Canada’s profile in the UK.

Education: A university degree from a recognised university.

Experience:
  • Minimum 7 years of recent* experience in leading/supervising a team with the ability to deliver goals and objectives.

  • Minimum 3 years or recent** knowledge and professional experience gained across at least one of the following: arts practice area (music, cinema, dance, cirque, visual arts, theatre, television, literature, emerging arts) and/orpartnership development and retention.

*Recent is 7 years within the last 10 years
**Recent is 3 years within the last 7 years

Linguistic Profile: Superior command of the English language is essential, including professional level writing capabilities.

Operational Requirements
  • Must be able to work overtime on short notice on occasion;
  • Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends);
  • Ability to travel when required

Conditions of employment
Hours of work will be 37.5 per week, worked Monday to Friday at time to be arranged by the supervisor. Any job offer is subject to receipt of satisfactory employment and character references and the ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security screening (including a criminal record check).

This position is open to candidates currently resident in the UK, who hold current documentation allowing them to work in the UK without restriction, who meet all of the essential requirements stated and whose applications are received by the closing date. Those candidates holding documentation/visas not renewable in the UK such as the Youth Mobility Visa will not be eligible to apply for this position.

The High Commission of Canada does not reimburse any travel costs to and from interview nor does it reimburse any relocation costs. The High Commission of Canada does not sponsor work permit applications on behalf of candidates.
